What is Yoga?
The word yoga, originates from the Sanskrit word “YUJ” which means to yoke or bind and is often understood as "union" or a method of discipline. A male who practices yoga is called a yogi, a female practitioner, a yogini.
The Indian sage Patanjali is given the credit to have gathered, collected and compiled the ancient practice of yoga into the Yoga Sutra, around 2,000 years ago. The Sutra is a gathering of 195 testimonials that serve as a philosophical guidebook for most of the modern yoga that is practiced today.
Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra’s outlines eight limbs of yoga:
- YAMAS (restraints),
- NIYAMAS (observances),
- ASANAS (postures),
- PRANAYAMA (breathing),
- PRATYAHARA (withdrawal of senses),
- DHARANA (concentration),
- DHVANI (meditation),
- SAMADHI (absorption).
